International Congress
ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT 2008

Opatija, Croatia
October 22 - 24, 2008

Topics

Innovation and Climate

Republic of Croatia recently ratified the Kyoto Protocol under the UN framework convention on climate change. Croatia thus assumed the pertinent obligations to reduce the emissions of greenhous gases, and in particular CO2. Although the overall contribution of Croatia to the emission of greenhouse gasses represents a particularly small amount, the obligations of the Kyoto Protocol represent a great challenge, which is likely to increase sharply with the expected accession of Croatia to the EU. This challenge is at the same time a great opportunity for tehnological, economic and institutional innovation. The main impulses for innovation are expected in three sectors: mobility, buildings, industry and energy engineering. From this premise follow the topics of the Congress:

• Strategies for climate change mitigation
• European Union regulations in the field of energy engineering
and environmental protection as well as their application
practice and tasks that are awaiting Croatia
• International and national incentives and regulations for energy
saving measures, and the implementation and usage of
renewable energy sources
• Innovation and technology of renewable energy sources
(hydropower, solar energy, wind energy, energy from
biomass and wastes) as well as their role in the sustainable
development
• Security of access to energy in view of the world-wide
increase of energy prices
• Introduction of environmentally friendly technologies
• Energy systems in traffic and transport
• Energy efficiency and cogeneration in industry and buildings
• Advanced combustion engines and vehicle technology, hybrid drives,
emission control, biofuels, hydrogen, fuel cells
